Frequently asked questions
What is an Ishtalinga, and how is it different from a Shivling?
An Ishtalinga is a small, personal form of Lord Shiva worshipped on the palm of the hand, while a Shivling is usually installed at a temple or home altar.
Do I need Linga Diksha to keep an Ishtalinga?
Traditionally, it’s received from a guru during Linga Diksha. Many devotees also keep one with reverence for personal prayer, but you may wish to consult your guru or family tradition.
How do I perform Ishtalinga puja?
Place it on your left palm, apply a little vibhuti, offer a flower or bilva leaf, then gaze at it steadily while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya.”
